CONDOM BASICS
Use latex condoms with water-based lubricants. (Avoid water-soluble lubricants as they are only whipped in water and contain oils.)
If you’re allergic to latex or prefer not to use latex condoms, polyurethane condoms (Avanti condoms and *Reality condoms for women) can be used with any lubrication including silicone or oil-based lubes.
*Note: The Reality Condom has been approved for birth control but not approved for anal sex.

Avoid Nonoxynol 9 as it is a detergent which can cause irritation and actually increase risk for HIV and STD’s.

Dental Dams are made of latex and used for oral/vaginal and oral/rectal contact (known as “rimming”). Although rimming does not place people at risk for HIV it can be a risk for other STD’s.

What can I do if other problems come up or I have other questions?
Please visit any of the agency sites listed on the WeHo LIFE Groups page or if you have additional questions about sexually transmitted diseases please visit the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's STD section at: www.lagaycenter.org

PUTTING ON A CONDOM
Make sure the condom is right side out, with the roll on the outside. Put a drop or two of lubricant in the tip on the inside of the condom. (Water-based lube for all latex condoms.)

Pinch a half-inch of space at the tip before you roll the condom on the hard penis. This leaves room for the semen, if you choose to ejaculate in your partner.

If you're uncircumcised (uncut), pull back the foreskin. Cover the head of the penis with the condom and roll it as far down the penis as it will go.

Apply plenty of lubricant to the condom-covered penis. Never use oil based lubes like Vaseline or baby oil unless they are polyurethane.

After ejaculation, and while you're still hard, hold on to the base of the condom as you pull out of your partner. Never reuse a condom. Use a new one every time.
